Renewed and revived Malayalam film ‘Thump’ by Shivendra Singh Dungarpur’s Film Heritage Foundation, Mumbai, which received international fame and national award in the field of film conservation, at the red carpet event of the 75th Cannes Film Festival to be held in France on Friday night. A grand performance was held.
On this historic day, Thierry Framaux, Director, Cannes Film Festival, welcomed Shivendra Singh Dungarpur, Director, Film Heritage Foundation Mumbai and his team and said that we are proud to screen a wonderfully inventive film like ‘Thump’ at the Cannes Film Festival.
In the ceremony, Shivendra Singh Dungarpur along with noted Malayalam heroine Jalja and film director Prakash Nair walked the red carpet to reach the venue.
Dungarpur said that the premium show of Thump Film at the Red Carpet Event of the Cannes Film Festival was a proud and historic moment for Indian cinema to be thrilled. Along with the selection of Thump film and its invitation to this prestigious International Film Festival is indeed a new chapter to be written in the history of Indian cinema.
Shivendra Singh Dungarpur told that the restoration of this classic film Thump (1978) by G. Aravindan Govindan, the greatest filmmaker of Malayalam film, has been completed by the Film Heritage Foundation in association with World Cinema Foundation and Cinetica di Bologna Institute, Italy. Before this, we all did the restoration of Udayshankar’s film ‘Kalpana’ made in 1948 and the film Kalpana was also shown at the Cannes Film Festival. Thus we are feeling proud on our yet another proud achievement.
He told that fortunately Thump (ie circus tent) has got the opportunity to participate in the Cannes Film Festival, which is a milestone for the Indian cine industry. Thump film was produced in 1978 under the banner of K.Raveendran Nair’s film company General Films. It was a black and white film and the director and screenplay of this film was G Aravindam, a well-known filmmaker of Malayalam film industry. He was an excellent director as well as a successful musician and gave his music to many Malayalam films. The story of the film Thump is based on the circus in which a circus comes to the village and the story of the entire film revolves around this. revolves around.
Shivendra Singh Dungarpur says about Thump film, when he was doing Diploma in Pune Film Institute, he saw this film at that time and he believes that these films of G. Aravindan Govindan enchant the audience. He told that there was commendable cooperation from Chennai’s famous organization Prasad Corporation in the restoration of this film. Along with this, there was also the active support of Arkaivis of Bangalore and Ramu Aravindan, son of G. Aravindam, who had many photographs, scripts and other items collected from his father.
He told that the Film Heritage Foundation, World Cinema Foundation and D. Bolonia’s Cinetica Sansthan had also decided to reincarnate in the year 2020 with Thump (1978), another unique film by G. Aravindan Govindan, Kumuthi (1979) and we A new chapter was created by restoring these films. These films are of world class, but at that time G. Aravindan’s films did not get the response they should have, so now we are restoring these films in their original form and placing them in front of the world.
Film megastar Amitabh Bachchan and Bollywood celebrities Manoj Bajpayee, Buman Irani, Mira Nair, Anurag Kashyap, etc. have asked Film Heritage Foundation director Shivendra Singh Dungarpur and his team to do the work of restoration of the thump film and get it selected for the Cannes Film Festival. He expressed confidence that this step of Shivendra Singh Dungarpur and his team in the journey of working dedicatedly to bring old films to life again and to save Indian film heritage is a milestone for the film industry. It is noteworthy that the Film Heritage Foundation of Shivendra Singh Dungarpur is the only non-governmental organization in the country working in the field of film preservation. Amitabh Bachchan is its brand ambassador. The Advisory Council of the Foundation includes eminent personalities Shyam Benegal, Kamal Haasan, Girish Kasaravalli, Gulzar, Gian Luca Farinelli, Jaya Bachchan, Krzysztof Zanussi, Mark, Kumar Shahani etc. Shivendra Singh, a member of the Dungarpur (Rajasthan) royal family, has also ventured into film acting and is starring opposite Amitabh Bachchan in director R Balki’s new film “Ghoomar”. Abhishek Bachchan and Saiami Kher are playing lead roles in this film. The film also stars Shabana Azmi and Angad Bedi.
